Live Lightning

Some of my favorite live performances. Ede Staal will not be a name familiar to those outside The Netherlands, but just listen to this brief snatch of song which Ede sings in a North Dutch dialect. My English translation is posted on the thread. Lhasa could well be a revelation for those discovering her for the first time. 'La Frontera' is from her album 'The Living Road'; surely one of the best albums of this or any other year. And if there is a more electrifying live performance than Fields of the Nephilim's 'At the Gates of Silent Memory' then I've yet to come across it. Headphones advised.

Vox Humanum

From such familiar names as Brel, Bowie, and Cave, to the roads less travelled. It's all in the voice. Algeria's Souad Massi is an inspiration, and those who have seen Ridley Scott's 'Black Hawk Down' will recognise the Breton song sung here by Prigent and Gerrard. Gerrard again pierces the soul with 'Sacrifice', but by the smattering of polite applause she receives from her audience at the end here it sounds like they hardly deserve her astonishing performance. Ignore them and listen to Lisa do it as no other can.

Real Dreams

There's a Mayan expression: "It is not true, it is not true, that we come to live here. We come only to sleep, only to dream." This is the music to do that to, whether that's the trance-inducing sounds that Popol Vuh created for Werner Herzog's film 'Aguirre, Wrath of God', Biosphere's auroral Arctic echoes, Artemiev's enhanced soundscapes for the films of Tarkovsky, or Philip Glass' mesmeric piano works.

Hi Spooky,
I miss chatting and talking about books with someone! Your Durer background image is pretty fascinating. I always loved his Melancholia engraving. Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? |

Hullo, I haven't dropped by for a while! Random question: do you like George Bernard Shaw? I just read 'Back To Methusalah', his science-fiction-type play that starts with the Fall of Adam and Eve and ends in 31,920 A.D. I read the beginning and thought of you!! It's an excellent book.
I haven't read any of his other work though, have you? ~Sarah |

Doll face: brilliant and very sad indeed- it's about conforming to the picture models we get from the media for sure but it reminds me also of what we (I) do when we try to conform to what we think the others are expecting from us (me)
